Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s (predictably) perfect charm hosting The Golden Globes last night was upstaged only by their outstanding looks. The ladies donned several garments throughout the night: poking fun at themselves on the red carpet in husband and wife inspired garb, dolling up in surprise costumes to mingle with the crowd; closing the ceremony in coordinating ensembles. The funny friends opened the awards in the red and blue gowns above, both reflecting the style theme of the evening: low, sparkly and showing lots of skin.
Baring skin at a formal awards show is tough. A short dress is casual and inappropriate, but a standard strapless gets boring quickly. Eva Longoria in Pucci nailed sexy sophistication – and completely took my breath away! Though her slit is daring she pulls it off flawlessly with her crazy-toned legs. The long sleeves and understated black lace allow her to have a revealing top without being too much. One of my two favorite looks of the night!
Insert my runner up, Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen. Staying on trend with skin, Kate also opts for the long-sleeved approach to balance a plunging neck line. Her gold embellishments are divine and classic McQueen glamour.
Kerry Washington in Miu Miu also took the plunge with a dramatically lowcut neckline and a short skirt covered in still-hot sheer. The whimsical fabric provides a peek of skin and a backdrop for sparkly appliqués. I love the length; ending at the ankle is an unexpected surprise (bravo on the nude heels, Kerry).
Presenter Catherine Zeta Jones was not nominated for a Golden Globe last night but she still earned a spot on my best dressed list. Though her skin-baring gown was tamer then some (ahem, J. Lo) she oozed sexy sophistication in this sheer, low-cut Jenny Packham number. CZJ looks comfortable, confident cool.
Ah, Jennifer Lopez. Despite my best efforts here you are on my list again. In fairness, it’s impossible to blog about a nearly-naked trend without including established sex pot J. Lo. She shines in this nude lace Zuhair Murad number. The master of the lowcut neck (seriously, the Versace gown from the 2000 Grammy’s has it’s own wiki page) kept it soft with subtle curls and makeup. Jennifer aced it this year.
Some celebs chose to get frisky without a plunging neckline. Cue to cut-outs, the new red carpet trend. Michelle Dockery of Downton Abbey looked ethereal in this Alexandre Vauthier gown which showed of her beautiful shoulders through gold cut-outs.
Emily Blunt went for the gold in this stunning Michael Kors gown. The cut-outs were risky, but paired with the high neckline and floor-grazing hem its just the right amount of sass.
Nicole Kidman also (almost) bared her midriff in Alexander McQueen. As a two-piece this gown would look cheap, but the sheer middle with fanned panels is flattering, sexy and elegant.
Kristen Wiig dared to bare her abs and chest in Michael Kors and pulled both off (while majorly channeling Jen Aniston at last year’s ceremony). With a rock-hard tummy and elusive smile Kristen is a smash hit.
